Customer Rating: Summary: Comapct design, power supply in the plug, good config options Comment: I purchased this modem when I switched to QWest DSL offerings, because I already had a wireless router, and, the ActionTecs seemed the only supported by hte Swest customer service.
The device worked perfectly (the trouble was in getting the instruction for set-up from QWest working for me).
Plenty of configuration options (that I'm not using, because I have firewall and port mapping done in the wireless router) and good diagnostic.
The pleasant surprise was the fact that the power supply was embedded in the power plug, so, not need of one more black box hanging in the rat-nest of clables nearby the television.
Customer Rating: Summary: Worked right of the box on AT&T DSL Comment: My Speedstream 5360 DSL modem recently died after about 10 years of service, and my backup (Speedstream 5100) was squealing like a banshee, so I needed to find a new modem. Looked around and saw the reviews for this modem looked pretty good, so went for it.
I'm happy to report that on AT&T DSL Elite, the modem worked right out of the box on the very first try, hooked to my Linksys WRT54GL wireless router; no configuration changes were necessary. I thought this was pretty cool, since I had to go into the advanced settings on the 5100 and put it in 'bridged mode' before it would work with my router, so I was rather pleased I didn't have to do this on the Actiontec.
It should be noted that the modem has no power switch and feels rather cheaply made, but I don't care as long as it works. Of course, I've only been running it for about an hour, but I'll update this review at a later time if it quits on me.
Customer Rating: Summary: DOES work with AT&T, despite what AT&T says Comment: I am very pleased with the modem and with the tech support provided by Actiontec. I bought this to replace the second AT&T-provided Motorola 2210 modem to burn out on me in less than three years. The only snag with installation occurred with AT&T, not Actiontec. I had to call AT&T to update my password information. You need to make sure that you have a new AT&T network password which is NOT the same as the permanent password you might have set up for your e-mail account when you first started service (it's a random set of letters and numbers, about 12 digits long). When you get to the part of Actiontec's setup instructions about entering your permanent username and password, you'll need to enter you AT&T/Bellsouth e-mail and the network password. AT&T kept trying to loop me back to an unnecessary password page when I opened my browser again, but the Actiontec support person I talked to easily resolved the issue for me. I can't yet comment on the durability of this product, but to me this seems like a good, less expensive choice to the obviously faulty Motorola modem.
Customer Rating: Summary: DSL Modem Comment: This is a great quality DSL modem. But like others have mentioned, if you have ATT Internet Service, it won't work when you hook it up. No problem. Just call ATT free 1800 service (phone number included in the instructions), and in about 30 minutes ATT will reset your modem. For some obsessive control reason, ATT wants to control your modem (big brother is watching), and they have to set a password for your modem to work. But once that's resolved, the modem works fast, faster than the Modem that ATT provides. And ATT's modem over time goes slower and slower. So it has to be replaced. It's much better to just buy a quality DSL modem than to go through ATT and get another one. If you want a quality DSL modem, this one is great!
Customer Rating: Summary: Easy setup, using for AT&T DSL Comment: Our AT&T Motorola modem died 14 months after 'buying it' from AT&T so the warranty expired. This modem was very easy to set up, I just had to put in my AT&T account user name & password and it downloaded all of the settings and has been working w/o a problem for about 2 months now. It runs a lot cooler than the Motorola.
